LITERACY CELEBRATIONS 2015

During Literacy Celebrations Week we will be participating in many literacy activities designed to engage, challenge and promote the value of literacy.

Some classes  collaborating with other Junior School classes and in some cases with Senior School students.  Other classes have connected their Units of Inquiry with literacy experiences.

We would like to share some of these experiences with you (stay tuned) in Week 9.

Learning about systems

2015-02-02 17.16.33Year 4 are currently learning about systems. We have explored ICT systems such as the functions and parts of a computer, networks, and emailing.

The students also examine the way that the systems work in the JS Library.

One of these systems is the Dewey Decimal Classification system.

There are many resources to support the teaching of DDC (see here) but the quiz below is a different approach.

Which Dewey Decimal Category Are You? DDC QUIZ

Learn about the library and the DDC through exploring your interests.

This quiz was created by EasyBib ( by Michele Kirschenbaum an information literacy librarian for EasyBib and ResearchReady).

This is what they say about the quiz…

“We know you love your library! Ever wonder what it would be like to become a book? Where would you be in the library? Which Dewey Decimal number would you be given? Take this quiz to find out!

Love Your Library month & Book Giving Day

For a few years we have been celebrating Love Your Library month. It is an excellent way to introduce students to the library as well as getting teachers involved and enthusiastic about visiting the library.

This year we have had teachers select their own gift of a Picture Book, Fiction or Non-Fiction book  and a bookmark that “Gives the Gift of Reading” through a list of recommended authors on a specific genre.

As a part of the Loving your Library  concept we also have “Getting to Know You” and  Library Orientation activities. These activities have been arranged around the PYP Concepts from the perspective of the library.

Classroom Teachers select how they would like to orientate their students and set up the Essential Agreements for the use of the library space.

Exhibition 2014 and technology

The students have been engaging with a variety of ICT in order to present and share their learning journey. Below are the websites, apps and auras that were designed for the Exhibition 2014.

Additionally students have also created eBooks, iMovies, Keynotes and presentations in other formats using their iPads.
