STUDENT LED CONFERENCES IN THE JS LIBRARY

When the classes visit the library for Student Led Conferences in a few weeks time they will have time to explore the library using  the PYP Concepts.

Each year level has a suggested PYP concept to explore but of course students can choose what they would like to do in this time.

These videos were created using Powtoon (which you are clearly told at the end of each animation).

Powtoon might be an excellent tool for Year 6 students and their upcoming Exhibition.

RESOURCES TO SUPPORT YOUR INQUIRY AND ONLINE RESEARCH

Students often find it difficult to know where to begin when searching on the internet.

I have put together Steps to Online Researching with suggested search engines for students on my JSSALC Library wiki.

jssalc wiki searching

SEARCHING THE INTERNET is a collection of Youtube videos, internet links, search hints and tips all gathered in one handy location.

Additionally, the JS Library Virtual Library ONLINE TOOLS for INFORMATION LITERACY has ICT tools matched to the research process.

More links can be found at INTERNET SEARCHING TUTORIALS  (my DIGGO JSSALC bookmarks).

The skills outlined in the following tutorial videos are essential for all users of Google (as most of us are!).

Supporting reading @SALC – ideas for parents

Sometimes it is hard to know where to get ideas to help your child with their reading.

Luckily there are many resources and books to give you ideas about how to do this.

READING RESOURCES (Books)

We have many books in the Parent Library that give ideas and support for promoting reading. One of these is Mem Fox’s Reading Magic. Please let us know if you would like to become a member of the Parent Library and borrow books from the Parent Library.

READING RESOURCES (online)

The following websites have great advice for parents.

READING ROCKETS

READING TIPS – SCHOLASTIC

RAISING READERS – PBS

Recently recommended by James Nelson (Director of Student Development) is the FOR THE TEACHERS site.

This excellent graphic (also downloadable as a PDF) suggests WAYS A PARENT CAN HELP A CHILD WITH READING (select this link for their blog post).

Here you will find a link to a Early Reader and Older Reader version of this resource (scroll to the bottom of the post).

ASK A LIBRARIAN and EFFECTIVE QUESTIONS

SEARCH – ASK – LEARN – CONNECT

ASK

Term 2 is focused on asking questions and what it means to ask questions.

Sometimes the question is more important than the answer.

What does this mean?

Students have been asked to ask me their questions (about anything) and I will endeavor to find an answer. Part of this process will be also demonstrating my research to find this answer (or answers).

STUDENT QUESTIONING

As a PYP school we encourage students to ask their questions and to direct their own inquiry.

One concept based on student questions is the PASSION PROJECT and GENIUS HOUR.

TEACHER QUESTIONING

Jamie Mackenzie has many books and blog posts about types of questions and how to formulate the right questions. This is the link to his QUESTIONING TOOLKIT.

This approach to developing effective questions is often coined as ungoogleable and it is essential that we support students “move beyond the cut and paste“.
