Term 3 …. BOOK SAFARI WORLD SAFARI….

Last week we were lucky enough to have two guest speakers – James Roy and Susy Boyer.

Susy presented her work to Prep – Year 2 students explaining her job illustrating picture books. We now have a copy of The Gobbling Tree– thank you!

James Roy presented to Year 4 and Yr 7 students. Additionally he presented a separate writing workshop for each Year 6 class. Check out his website and try out the magnetic poetry.

James’ latest book – Edsel Grizzler , The Voyage to Verdada is also now in our library.  You can also view a trailer (UTube) for this novel.  Check it out.

Great entertainment – with useful tips to improve your writing skills!

Thanks James.

Let me know what you thought of the Author Visits. Did you learn something new? Were they interesting, entertaining ….?

Who would else would you like to see (Australian authors/illustrators)?

Year 4

In Term 2, Year 4 have been inquiring into the different ways that people communicate.

In the Junior Library students examined a variety of forms of communication, learnt how to effectively make notes and to keep a bibliography.

Unit of Inquiry :
People use different modes of communication to effectively express themselves.

Different modes of communication

  • How they can be effectively and appropriately used
  • Factors affecting communication choices
  • The roles and relationships in communication situations

Extra resources to help find information for research are available on the Yr 4 moodle page (password required)

Students created a WORDLE to brainstorm words to describe the different forms of communication.

Have used WORDLE ?

Feedback from the SKYPE conversations with Yokohama International School.

日本語 五年生 Year 5

What did you think about your video conference with Akiko Sensei’s class in Japan? どうでしたか。
I thought it was interesting and I got the chance to meet kids in Japan.
It was great. It was a great experience.
It was fun.
It was an awesome experience.
I enjoyed saying my self introduction.
It was new and fun.

Do you think this project using Skype helped you learn Japanese? 日本語のべんきょうになりましたか。
Yes, because we were only allowed to use Japanese.
Yes, but it was a little hard to hear at times.
Some words I did not understand.
Yes, I learnt how to say more words and my self introduction in Japanese.
Yes because we had to answer questions and say hard things.
Yes, it built up my confidence.
Yes, I have learnt how to introduce myself.

What do you think we could do in the second conference?
こんどなにができるとおもいますか。

We could talk about what we are learning in class
Get everyone to ask a question.
Everyone should have a go at speaking.
We could let the students in Japan speak in their native language as well. French etc.
We could speak in English as well.
To learn more about their school and what they have learned.
We could do a play for them.
We should talk about what they do in Japan.
It could be a bit louder.
We could make a slide show for them about the things we have learnt.
Let more students have a chance to talk.
