Makey Makey

Last term, Kate and I went down to the library to learn how makey makey works so we could share it with the class. Mrs Rees was our teacher and she showed us how to use it.

There were many cables and wires you needed to connect but once you get the hang of it, you know how to use it. There was a connecting wire that needed to be plugged into the computer. The microchip was small but had many things on it.

You could take any random cord and plug it into a random button. The buttons include of the arrow keys, the space bar and the ENTER button.

We used a banana for the space bar, magnets for the arrow keys and a scribble drawn on a piece of paper (lead colouring). There was only certain things the electricity could travel through. Lead can be surprisingly electricaly conductive which is one of the materials you can use for makey makey.

Finally we showed the class how to use it and everyone got a go. The screen display showed a piano with the cords plugged into the makey makey microchip.

You can also use it for coding. Apps like scratch can be made more fun with makey makey. If you want to play flappy bird on scratch, you can! With makey makey!

I had fun and you can use it for fun and games/entertainment.

Document Journal

DAY 1

Today I had to choose a certain technology topic for my UOI. I chose personal devices because I want to find out about the original phone and the evolution of this technology theme. Personal devices are a range of phones and iPads can be used for education, fun games, communication and etc. These devices have changed drastically through technology and the internet.

Their use is to communicate, educate, have fun, share notifications and many more reasons.

HOW DO IPADS AND IPHONES COMMUNICATE IDEAS AND BELIEFS?

-Through apps such as Messenger,Skype,Facebook, etc which can allo people to keep up to date with current affairs.

-Dialing phone numbers to communicate with people if you need help or need to get somewhere. For EG, (Uber).

-Text messages to talk to people by sending words and images to each other.

-Sending images to show friends and family what you have been up to (etc).

HOW COMMUNICATION HAS CHANGED

Phones used to be microphones connected by a cord into the wall. Now they have evolved and are small and smart. Ipads have also been invented and are a lot more easier to use than the original model.

This was before my time. I only know about ipads.

The original iPad used to have only a limited amount of apps which were the most basic apps like calendar, phone and settings. The games on these devices were limited to old arcade simulations. The new IPad has a massive variety of helpful apps like Apple TV and Facebook.

PROS AND CONS

-Educational for kids (Mathletics, Games3Plearning).

-Fun(video games for example fortnite, pubg etc).

-Easy to use touch screen and easy to use.

-Communicate to people (texting).

-Many helpful apps (how to use it like the settings app for notifications).

CONS:

-Addictive( people are on them ALOT).

-Makes people obiece (fat from not getting excersise).

-Non social(too busy looking down on their phones).

-Makes people lazy(people don’t do much when on their phones).

UNPACKING OUR CENTRAL IDEA

When I was unpacking my central idea,I had to find the description of each word in the title.

I recommend (my opinion) to go apple over android because apple have a better quality iPad/iphone and are easier to use. Although androids have more apps, Apple have easier apps to use.Apple have more than 2 billion units online compared to androids 1.5 billion (google proves through a graph created by apple scientists.) Apple have been a longer lasting company so Apple have more experience and have a better understanding of what pleases customers. For example Siri. She might sound annoying, but she can be a real help sometimes with languages, and help with searching things up (facts) on Google.

Phones and IPads are really great because they are fun, used for education and communication! I know that IPads and IPhones are going to be AMAZING in the future. So go ahead to your local Apple store and get yourself and IPad or IPhone today!

Kat-Assisted technologies

Kat, a yr 12 student from Marymac created a prize winning piece of technology for a disabled kid.

Belief-She believed that everyone should have acces to gaming.

Idea-She created a console for a child with cereable palsy to use.

Who-Friend with cereable palsy

Why-Wanted him to work with technology in his own way.

What-A gaming controller

Podcasts with Mrs Kelly

Last week,Mrs Kelly came in to talk about podcasts with us. She showed the podcast Short and Curly. It was really good! Podcasts allow you to listen to your choice of a story. You can listen to what you want, when you want, how you want.

These are the differences between the radio and podcasts.

Podcasts.                                                                                     Radio

On demand                                                                                  Live

pre recorded on the app.                          Travels through sound waves

The same things

Communicate

Ideas

Microphone

I really enjoyed listening to Mrs Kelly talk about podcasts. Now i know some great podcasts to listen to!

A Drones Purpose

A few days ago, Mr Ivet came into yr5 to discuss drone technology. I found out drones can display many purposes.

Drones advantages:

-Used for google maps

-Shark spotting

-Tall building safety checks

-Real estate photos

-Rescue people (drop floaties)

-Farmers can use to heard cattle

-Deliver food

-Film making

Unfourtunately there are some disadvantages.

-can disrupt air space

-invade privacy

-can break/pollute

-They aggravate wildlife

-Can be dangerous (Sharp propellers, could hit someone).

Week 1

Provocation

Last week, we did some rotations based on our new unit of inquiry. My first rotation was coding. We had to solve quizzes that involve getting form A to B. I learnt that I could solve algorithms with different block codes to control character.

The second rotation was about the technology timeline of the pencil and paper. Pencils are used to record information that a user/someone can read. We also wrote a camp reflection while discussing the uoi topic. I learnt that the original pencil looked much different.

My final rotation was about little robots called Spheros. I learnt Spheros could be controlled by an iPad through a connection array. The ipads had the controls onscreen. I learnt that technology isn’t just a device, but is built to communicate a purpose.
