Virtual Reality

What is VR?

VR allows us to immerse in a virtual landscape by wearing an advanced headset. The headsets pair with an app on your phone. You can also wirelessly connect your headset to your tv. But you cant move without two hand held controllers that allow you to interact and move. You can communicate through VR by watching a tv channel or playing a game. Your phone communicates to the headset which projects through a screen to give a real life experience. The controllers tell the headset what needs to move and when. The reason I chose VR is that it creates an illusion very well efficiently. It’s very interesting.

VR can help people with motion sickness and phobias of animals such as spiders and dogs by interacting with them in a virtual world. VR has developed over the years and they look a lot better then the 1958 version. VR graphics have also gotten better and as have motion qualities.

How does it work?

VR headsets have a divider in the headset that does what or eyes do. Our eyes both see slightly different perspectives of the world and our brain fuses those images together to make up how we see the world. The 1958 VR headsets were not very advanced and did not have that quality, making it less realistic. But the 2019 ones have that and many other quality’s such as sounds, interaction with objects and people, and communication through VRChat room. VRChat room is a virtual space were users can interact and communicate with others through voice chat, emoticons and other ways.

Some VR headsets have the ability to communicate with others any were in the world. It’s very efficient for communicating to others. Ivan Sutherland invented VR and made the first VR headset. The headset was suspended from the ceiling and was not very comfortable to wear.

Advantages

1. A safe environment for training

2. It can help problem solving skills

3. It can help with phobias of animals

4. VR can help students in university learn things like Architect and engineering.

Disadvantages

1. VR can damage our eyes

2. VR can make some people sick

3. VR can crash and some data can be lost

4. VR deteriorates our human ability to socialise

5. Its quite expensive

6. Can cause seizures if connected to motion sensors

Recommendations

I would like to see a VR headset that has a neural connection to our brains and lets us log on remotely. The should look into the fact that data is getting lost and personal details getting stolen. They should improve the VRChat abilities and make it a faster connection, safer and have better quality.

The end

Week1

Provocation

Last week, we did some activities based on our currant UOI. The first activity was coding. We did block coding to control a character to get to one point to another. The characters were angry birds, minecraft and Ice Age.

The second activity was UOI, (technology). We learnt that not everything has to have electronics to be technology. Technology is designed to help us in our every day lives. Paper helps us document and books entertain us.

The final activity was Spheros. Spheros are little electronic balls that can be controlled by a user. We got to drive them around, change there colour and even block code them! It was very fun.
